JAIME

The Sloterplas is very special to me. It’s not only one of the lakes around Amsterdam where I love to freedive, but also where I come to walk my dog, Dodger, to open-water swim or simply to escape the hectic city centre.

I’ve been living in Amsterdam now since 1998. First in Centrum – Nieuwezijds. And then from 2008 to 2024, in Oud-West – the Kinkerbuurt. Over the years, Amsterdam has become way too crowded, chaotic and claustrophobic for me. My focus has shifted 180° from Centrum to Oud-West to Nieuw-West in an attempt to find more peace and quiet, and to escape the city in search of nature.

The Sloterplas in Nieuw-West became my go-to spot – dog-walking distance from Oud-West, trees, water, and the Boothuis Restaurant with its secluded patio right on the lakeside.

It wasn’t long before I met Floris, the owner of the Watersportcentrum Sloterplas, and we got chatting about how suitable the lake would be for freediving. No one knows the lake better than he does. It’s deepest spot is 35 metres deep, not too far from the shore, changing rooms and hot showers at the water sports centre, restaurant …

… I didn’t need much persuasion and I’ve been diving here now for three years with a large and active community of freedivers from across the Netherlands called The Fanatic Freedivers.

I set The Fanatic Freedivers community up in late 2022 as a way to bring freedivers in the Netherlands together and keep them diving in Dutch open waters – freedivers who often discover the wonders of freediving in some far-off, exotic location, but then assume no one freedives in the Netherlands.

However, freediving in Dutch lakes isn’t the same as freediving in the tropics. It’s very, very different.

On a single breath, I descend the line connecting the buoy at the surface to the weight on the lake’s bottom. I pass through a warmer surface layer: bright but poor visibility due to algae. I jokingly refer to this as Dutch pea soup. Then below the pea soup at five or so metres, I enter the twilight zone: crystal clear visibility but already cooler and darker. Going deeper still, I enter the darkness. From ten metres to the bottom, I freefall into the cold and pitch black depths.

Line-diving isn’t so much about exploring the underwater world, it’s more an exploration into myself. A quest for total relaxation and a state of zen or flow. It’s a minute or two of almost total silence except for the sound of my own heartbeat slowed to 40 or fewer beats per minute – me, myself and I. Another world free from the stress, anxiety and worries of life on dry land.

Life took a downward turn for me in 2024. I lost my marriage and I moved out of my family home in the Kinkerbuurt. I’ve been couch-surfing for over a year now from Amstelveen to Beverwijk to Castricum to Dahab to Ouderkerk and back again. But luckily I also got to spend a few stints flat- and dog-sitting for a freediving buddy of mine who lives here on the Oeverpad along the Sloterplas’s western shoreline.

I loved living there next to one of my favourite lakes, dog-walking areas, chill-out spots and freediving sites. And being able to swim across the lake to the Boothuis Restaurant for coffee or lunch, and then swimming back home again afterwards.

The Sloterplas has been an anchor in my life through the up and downs of the past year, and is and will be forever in my heart and mind.

Eerst in Centrum - Nieuwezijds.
